“I saw harassment” Initiative Press Release in opposition of sexual violence against women and young girls during the 2013 Eid al-Fitr Holiday مشاركة

In an effort to ensure the safety and security of women and young girls during the 2013 Eid al-Fitr Holiday, I Saw Harassment spreads its volunteers in the vicinity of center Cairo

In the light of the prevalence of sexual violence crimes, cases of sexual terrorism and mass incidents of harassment and rape which have recently heightened in number in Egypt recently particularly during mass rallies and festive holidays…

This was precisely the rationale behind launching the “I saw harassment” Initiative during Eid El Fitr 2012, what we have seen and dealt with in monitoring the incidents and violations against women and girls who meant to access safe, secure streets in which they may enjoy a stroll if they wished, rightfully so.  The persistence of the sentiment of rage and the heightened violence on Egyptian streets, the continued targeting and exploitation of women and young girls, makes it critical that measures are taken to ensure safety on the streets for men and women alike.

“I saw harassment” initiative consequently announces its presence in downtown Cairo during the days of the Eid El-Fitr holiday 2013 (3 days), particularly in the spots where high levels of sexual harassment where reported, as well as in front of cinema theatres.

“I saw harassment” initiative stresses the importance of all volunteers wearing the “I saw harassment” t-shirt, with the initiative’s motto written on the front and on the back.

“I saw harassment” initiative is a pressure group that monitors and documents sexual violence crimes targeting girls and women, raises their awareness concerning their rights and the manner by which they may combat these crimes, as well as providing legal and moral support to women and girls who are subject to any form of sexual violence or assault.

Propositions:

-All Egyptian families must support girls and women not to place the blame on the person who has been harassed, and to let this victim be without holding them accountable.

-Egyptian citizens must address these crimes and work to support women and girls who have been subjected to harassment, be it sexual violence or verbal and physical abuse in public spaces.

-The Egyptian Interior Ministry must oblige to its responsibility in providing troops with the appropriate training to handle these crimes without inflicting any party to human rights violations or breaching the law, taking into account that some of the offenders in these crimes are as young as 8 or 10 years old, as well as not blaming the girls and women initiating a report or calling for help.

-“I saw harassment” Initiative calls for all feminist organizations and initiatives combating harassment to realize the need for on the ground participation and presence to provide safe, secure streets (and Eids!) for women and girls across Egypt.

-“I saw harassment” Initiative emphasizes its commitment in handling all incidents as peacefully as possible, taking into account the right each member of the initiative has to self-defense in the case of being put in a life-threatening situation.

-“I saw harassment” Initiative receives reports of assault via our hotline 01150118822 , or the hashtag #شفت_تحرش, or through our twitter page @ShoftTa7rosh, as well as through the initiative’s official webpage: https://www.facebook.com/Shoft.Ta7rosh

-“I saw harassment” Initiative also announces that those interested in volunteering during Eid El-Fitr 2013 may sign up any time until the first day of Eid.
